Colors of Connection is a nonprofit organization that supports girls in conflict and post-conflict settings, using creative approaches to promote mental wellbeing and contribute to social transformation. Since 2015, Colors of Connection has focused its efforts in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a region severely affected by violence, displacement, and poverty. Through weekly support sessions led by trauma-informed mentors, Colors of Connection provides a space where girls can process the hardships they face, build resilience, and gain confidence.
Living in Eastern Congo has become increasingly difficult due to war and conflict in the area. For girls, the devastating effects are amplified. According to the World Food Programme, sexual violence and exploitation has dramatically increased in recent years, especially as girls and their families are struggling to survive without food or a source of income. Furthermore, mental health resources are nearly nonexistent, which means girls do not have the support they need to process the trauma they are experiencing.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, Colors of Connection will implement a project to provide girls safe spaces and creative learning opportunities that center their voices. The organization will teach girls essential life skills through activities that focus on safety, emotional regulation, and self-care. Girls will also have the opportunity to engage in artistic activities to identify and express their emotions and experiences, and they will work together to contribute to a public mural in their community.
Colors of Connection expects to directly support 420 girls through this project. The organization hopes to provide a space where girls can express themselves and heal from the trauma they have experienced. Grounded in the power of art and community, Colors of Connection seeks to imagine a brighter, safer future for Congo’s daughters.
