Generation Girl is an Indonesia-based non-profit organization that equips adolescent girls with the skills, confidence, and community they need to become future female leaders in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Since launching in 2018, the organization has reached more than 6,000 girls across Indonesia through programs that help them gain foundational coding, design, and problem-solving skills while building supportive peer and mentor networks.
In Indonesia, girls and young women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM fields. Many adolescent girls, especially those living outside major cities, lack access to quality STEM education, exposure to role models, or safe spaces to explore new skills. Social norms and stereotypes can discourage girls from pursuing interests in science and technology, and families may not always see the value in investing in girls’ technical learning. This lack of early exposure and support contributes to a wider gender gap in Indonesia’s STEM sector, limiting economic opportunities for women and slowing progress towards gender equality overall.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, Generation Girl aims to deliver four one-week STEM bootcamps that combine hands-on technical workshops, leadership and confidence-building sessions, and mentorship from inspiring women in STEM fields. Hybrid programming will reach girls in underserved cities and remote areas, removing barriers to participation and ensuring inclusivity.
Generation Girl aims to reach 1,000 adolescent girls and more than 3,000 community members through this project. The organization hopes that by nurturing future female leaders in science and technology, it can help create a more inclusive, equitable future where girls everywhere can thrive.
