Girl Power Foundation Uganda (GPFU) is a community-based organization in rural Uganda with a mission to empower girls and young women with the confidence, skills, and opportunities to lead self-sustaining and impactful lives. GPFU works with adolescent girls and young women through mentorship, education support, leadership development, vocational skills training, menstrual health education, and community engagement
In rural communities in Uganda’s Kanungu District, adolescent girls face barriers that limit their ability to reach their full potential. Poverty, limited educational opportunity, menstrual health challenges, gender inequality, child marriage, violence, and restrictive social norms affect girls’ confidence, agency, and educational potential. Families and schools also need support to create environments where girls are encouraged to pursue their aspirations.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, GPFU will implement a 24-month program which will create mentorship sessions and safe spaces where girls can build leadership and life skills. The sessions will also provide menstrual health and wellbeing education, career guidance, future planning, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial skills. The programming will engage parents, caregivers, teachers, boys, and community members to strengthen surrounding support networks.
Through this program, GPFU will reach 700 girls and 2,000 community members. GPFU aims to help girls grow in confidence and agency, stay connected to opportunities for learning, and become active leaders in shaping their own futures. GPFU believes that when girls are supported to recognize their potential and given the tools and opportunities to thrive, the positive impact extends beyond individual girls to their families, schools, and communities.
