Girls Education Mission International (GEM) is a Nigerian nonprofit organization empowering girls to learn, lead, and thrive by expanding access to quality education, ensuring safety, and fostering supportive environments. Its flagship programming provides mentorship clubs, direct support, and community advocacy to keep girls engaged and in school. Over the years, GEM’s programming has demonstrated a measurable impact, achieving 100% retention rates among mentored girls in some states.
In Northern Nigeria, millions of girls are pushed out of school due to systemic issues such as poverty and cultural norms. In states such as Plateau, Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Adamawa, boys’ education is prioritized more and girls are often pressured into early marriage and domestic labor. Extreme poverty makes school costs unaffordable, and a lack of basic necessities such as sanitary pads can lead to higher absenteeism and dropouts. Without proper support systems, girls often disengage from school and their potential for future opportunities shrinks, perpetuating a cycle of poverty.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, GEM will implement its award-winning “The Girl Equation: Keeping Girls in Class” program. The project establishes safe spaces for girls to receive mentorship, life skills, and reproductive health education. The program also covers school and exam fees and provides menstrual products. Communities are also engaged through meetings, media campaigns, community dramas, and reporting systems to ensure girls’ education is a priority. This integrated model ensures girls are supported not just individually, but by families, schools, and systems working together
The project will directly reach 80 adolescent girls through mentorship and educational support and will indirectly reach 2,500 girls. The project will also engage approximately 10,000 community members. By combining mentorship, material support, and accountability, GEM will continue to build communities where girls are seen, supported, and empowered.
