Growth Through Learning

Growth Through Learning

Growth Through Learning (GTL) is an organization that supports education and development in East Africa by providing full secondary education scholarships for young women in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. These scholarships support girls who would otherwise be unable to afford an education beyond primary school.  More than 2400 scholars have graduated from GTL’s program in East Africa.

Throughout East Africa, many girls’ families are unable to afford to send their children to high school. Many families that can afford funding prioritize sending their boys to school due to social norms.  In Uganda, nearly 30% of girls at the secondary school age are out of school. In Tanzania, less than 20% of women  have completed secondary school and 20% have had no education at all.

With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, Growth Through Learning will provide educational scholarships to 75 girls that were able to pursue their high school education from support from a previous GOA grant. These girls are now in their third year of high school, and the GTL scholarship will cover all costs; tuition, uniform, exam fees, school supplies, room and board at a safe and academically rigorous school.

Educating GTL girls has strong ripple effects throughout their communities. GTL alumni report that they are able to support people in their respective communities with tasks such as preparing job applications and translating documents and sharing public health information. GTL ultimately envisions a world where all women receive the education they need to realize their own potential and fulfill their aspirations for themselves, their families, and their communities.
