Her Journey To School is an organization in Tanzania with a mission and vision to unlock the potential of girls, promoting a generation in which access to safety, accurate information, and quality education is no longer something that girls have to fight for. The organization works to increase access to quality information, promote health and well-being, enhance safety and protection, build leadership and life skills, expand economic opportunity, and strengthen community engagement.
In many communities in Tanzania, adolescent girls face barriers that limit their access to quality education. Factors such as poverty, a lack of school resources, limited health information, early pregnancy, gender-based violence, and harmful social norms often disrupt girls’ education and hinder their potential. Many girls lack access to informed education systems, such as mentorship on life skills training or safe spaces to discuss challenges affecting their education and wellbeing. Without proper support systems, teen mothers and other vulnerable girls often miss out on chances that could help them gain economic independence.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, Her Journey To School will implement its Ndoto ya Binti program, which involves weekly mentorship sessions in partner schools to engage girls in personal leadership, study skills, sexual and reproductive health and wellness, resilience, and psychosocial support. The program will offer learning materials to girls who face financial and social barriers. The organization will also conduct meetings where parents, teachers, and local leaders will be invited to emphasize the value of girls’ education, safety, and leadership.
The project will directly reach 120 adolescent girls through mentorship and educational support and will reach an additional 480 community members through community engagement and dialogue. Her Journey to School hopes to empower girls with the knowledge, confidence, and resources they need to succeed in school and beyond, and to inspire a ripple effect that positively impacts other girls and the wider community.
