Jharkhand Vikas Parishad (JVP) is a grassroots organization dedicated to empowering marginalized communities and fostering sustainable rural development in Jharkhand, India. The organization promotes education, health, and well-being, with a special focus on women and children. To date, the organization has directly impacted more than 8,700 adolescent girls across Jharkhand through its community-centric projects centered on girls’ education and ending child marriage.
In Jharkhand, rates of child marriage exceed the national average. With a poverty rate of 37 percent in Jharkhand, many families resort to child marriage in hope of relieving financial hardship. Early marriages force girls to abandon their schooling and contribute to elevated maternal and infant mortality rates due to early pregnancies.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, JVP will implement its Adolescent Girls’ Empowerment Program. The project specifically targets the district of Dumka, which has high rates of early marriage, poverty, school dropouts, and limited opportunities for adolescent girls. The project will provide vocational skills training, health and gender equity workshops, and educational support. It will also connect girls with economic opportunity, build awareness of gender equity in the community, and strengthen community infrastructure for child protection.
The Adolescent Girls’ Empowerment Program expects to directly reach 800 adolescent girls and an additional 3,200 community members. The organization is committed to fostering gender equality, strengthening child protection systems, and creating a sustainable ecosystem where every adolescent girl in Jharkhand can lead a dignified, self-reliant life free from exploitation and with access to full opportunities.
