Keiyo Women Trust is a grassroots, women-led organization dedicated to advancing gender equality through education, skills development, and advocacy. A key pillar of the organization’s work is promoting girls’ education with a strong focus on digital skills. The organization also incorporates mentorship and life skills training to build confidence, leadership, and resilience among girls. Keiyo Women Trust has trained more than 400 adolescent girls to date in basic Information and Communications Technology (ICT) skills.
In rural areas of Elgeyo Marakwet County in Kenya, hundreds of adolescent girls lack access to basic computer skills and digital literacy. Most families in the region live below the poverty line and cannot afford computers, internet access, or even school fees. This lack of digital skills not only limits girls’ personal development but also weakens their ability to make informed life choices, access information about health and rights, and participate meaningfully in civic and economic life.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, Keiyo Women Trust will expand its Metkei ICT Hub, where girls can receive free training in basic computer skills, internet use, typing, research, online safety, and digital communication. By offering free, structured training programs, the organization will empower girls from low-income backgrounds with digital skills, as well as mentorship and life skills. Girls who are out of school or at risk of early marriage will be prioritized.
The organization expects to directly train 700 adolescent girls in digital literacy and reach 2,000 additional community members through outreach, mentorship forums, and awareness events. By providing free, hands-on computer training and mentorship, the organization aims to bridge the digital divide, boost girls’ confidence, and open doors to education, employment, and leadership opportunities. It envisions a future where no girl is left behind because of poverty or lack of access to technology.
