Komera is a nonprofit organization based in Rwanda that empowers adolescent girls and young women through a holistic model of education, health, and community development. Since 2009, Komera has been guided by a mission to ensure that every girl has the right to lead, grow in confidence, and realize her full potential. With a 100% secondary school graduation rate among program participants and more than 65 university graduates, Komera’s impact reaches far beyond the classroom by challenging social norms, supporting families, and developing young leaders across the country.
In Rwanda, adolescent motherhood is rising and too often disrupts education, perpetuating cycles of poverty, isolation, and stigma for young women. While Rwanda has implemented policies to support school reintegration for young mothers, many barriers still remain, including social stigma, child care responsibilities, and financial obstacles. To address these challenges, Komera implements targeted programming to meet the unique needs of adolescent mothers.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, Komera will expand its Teen Mom Program by reintegrating adolescent mothers into local day schools. Ten girls will re-enter the classroom, and 20 others will participate in certified vocational training — all supported through counseling, healthcare, wellness, and mentorship. Komera will also work closely with families to create nurturing home environments and engage school staff in supportive practices. Community sensitization campaigns will address harmful social norms, while a girl-led monitoring and evaluation system will ensure the program remains effective and responsive to girls’ needs.
Komera expects to support 30 adolescent girls and reach an additional 420 community members through this holistic project. By combining direct services with family, school, and community engagement, the project aims to restore hope, opportunity, and dignity to young mothers — helping ensure that motherhood is not the end of a girl’s education.
