M.E.A.N. Girls Empowerment

M.E.A.N. Girls Empowerment

Manage Emotions Avoid Negativity Girls Empowerment Inc. (M.E.A.N. Girls Empowerment or MGE) empowers adolescent girls to avoid negativity, build confidence, and pursue their goals through perseverance, courage, and creativity. MGE offers community-based mentoring programs on the South Side of Chicago that focus on issues pertinent to girls’ lives, such as bullying prevention and health, and tailors its efforts to the unique social and emotional dynamics that girls face.

The Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund will support the expansion of the M.E.A.N. Girls Empowerment program at Walter Dyett High School for the Arts, located near the future Obama Presidential Center. This 16-week teen mentoring program will serve 30 adolescent girls ages 14 to 18. Aligning with the Illinois State Board of Education’s K-12 Social Emotional Learning Standards, this program will promote mental health safety, positive emotional development, and holistic wellbeing. Through engaging weekly sessions and a tailored curriculum, the program will help girls cultivate self-confidence, enhance their leadership abilities, and empower participants to make healthy choices. Each session will also incorporate mindfulness practices, therapeutic activities, and peace circles to foster safe spaces for emotional regulation and healing. The program will also offer support services, including peer-led group therapy and individualized counseling, as needed. The program will culminate in a special empowerment ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments and personal growth of each participant.

Through its programs, MGE has fostered inclusivity, reduced bullying, and created nurturing environments that leave a lasting impact on girls and their communities.
