Msichana Empowerment Kuria is dedicated to preventing violence against girls in rural and cross-border communities in Kenya. The organization focuses on girls’ education, safe spaces, menstrual health, and economic development. Since 2015, the organization has helped hundreds of girls re-enroll in school, supported survivors, and promoted healthy outcomes through its girl-led safe spaces.
In rural communities in Kenya, eight in 10 girls are at risk of female genital mutilation. Many girls are married at young ages due to extreme poverty in the family. These factors, in addition to sexual abuse, impact girls’ health and limit their ability to complete school and achieve their full potential.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, Msichana Empowerment Kuria will support girls through three pathways. First, it will provide educational support by providing school fees, learning materials, and mentorship. It will also support health by providing menstrual health information as well as mental health services to girls impacted by trauma. Finally, the organization will strengthen its girl-led safe spaces, which will allow girls to build relationships and leadership skills, share information, and safely report cases of violence.
Through this project, Msichana Empowerment Kuria expects to reach 1,225 girls and 500 community members, including caregivers and community leaders. Its team believes deeply that investment in girls’ education is not just life-changing, it is life-saving. The program hopes to help ensure that every girl has the power to define her own life.
