Our Sisters Opportunity (OSO) transforms community livelihoods by providing vulnerable girls with the skills, tools, safe spaces, and resources to drive their own futures. OSO has provided vocational training and entrepreneurship education to girls, conducted community dialogues on gender-based violence, human rights, and power dynamics, supported menstrual hygiene education in schools, and established safe spaces for girls.
In Rwanda, 35% percent of girls complete lower secondary school. There is a need for quality vocational and entrepreneurship education, especially in rural areas. Rates of teen pregnancy are rising, leading to reduced educational opportunities and stigma from the community. Additionally, girls in rural areas miss school often due to a lack of access to menstrual hygiene products or sexual violence.
Through the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, OSO will provide 100 teen mothers and vulnerable girls who have dropped out of school with a year-long training in vocational, leadership, and life skills. OSO will also provide training around sexual and reproductive health and rights at schools. OSO will establish safe spaces where OSO agents of change will support girls and distribute menstrual products. OSO will also host monthly dialogue sessions with community members from six sectors of its district to increase awareness around gender-based issues and rights.
OSO is dedicated to empowering more than 3,000 girls by providing education about the importance of engaging in school and fostering the development of vocational skills. The project aims to educate, empower, and instill confidence in girls, enabling them to fulfill their potential. OSO ultimately strives to create a safer, fairer, and freer environment for girls where they have support, understand their rights, are not hindered by menstruation stigma. and live free from gender-based violence.
