Quinta Ola

Quinta Ola

Quinta Ola is a feminist nonprofit organization committed to advancing the rights of adolescent girls and women. The organization celebrates girls and women in all their diversity and promotes their interests through education, advocacy, and research. Since its founding in 2020, the organization has served more than 800 girls. Its programs are designed to promote girls’ leadership and advocacy skills, and program participants have gone on to form their own youth activism collectives. Quinta Ola has received several awards for its work, including the prestigious UNHCR NGO Innovation Award.

The perspectives of adolescent girls are often missing in spaces where their interests are considered and debated, which often leads to their needs being neglected. Quinta Ola is working to increase opportunities for girls to make their voices heard, particularly in conversations about issues which directly impact their lives such as climate change, mental health, and gender-based violence. To that end, the organization equips girls with the tools they need to directly advocate for themselves as representatives of their generation and communities.

The Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund will support “GirlGov Peru,” Quinta Ola’s flagship leadership development program for adolescent girls. The organization will train and support girls between the ages of 13 and 17 who will learn skills such as public speaking and community building so that they can advocate for themselves. Quinta Ola will also provide classes on topics such as gender-based violence prevention, which will enable girls to identify various forms of violence and provide them with concrete lessons on reporting mechanisms. Additionally, Quinta Ola will engage family and community members through sensitization workshops and awareness campaigns, which will focus on changing social norms regarding gender-based violence and gender roles.

Through this project, Quinta Ola expects to directly support 40 girls in Metropolitan Lima and to reach a total of 220 family and community members. The organization hopes to promote civic engagement among adolescent girls and provide a supportive environment which enables them to realize the power in their voice and perspective. Ultimately, the organization seeks to develop a future generation of girl leaders who are bold, courageous, and believe in their ability to bring about change.
