Sisters in Cinema

Sisters in Cinema

Sisters in Cinema is a nonprofit organization in Chicago dedicated to empowering Black girls, women, and gender-expansive media creators through educational programs, increased visibility, and community engagement. Through its programs, Sisters in Cinema offers a safe space for girls to develop valuable media skills while exploring relevant issues such as mental health, peer relationships, identity, and safety. By providing creative, technological, and emotional tools, the programs empower them to share their stories, build self-assurance, and control their narratives.

Building on Sisters in Cinema’s proven success with “learn-to-earn initiatives,” the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund will support up to 50 adolescent girls in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood through two initiatives: (1) “Pocket Cinema,” which teaches comprehensive smartphone filmmaking skills, from writing, shooting, and editing; and (2) “Podcasting for Beginners,” which guides participants through podcast development, recording, and production. Both initiatives are mentorship-driven and integrate social-emotional learning. Intensive Saturday training sessions will also be held at the Sisters in Cinema Media Arts Center in South Shore, which offers leadership development training, creative expression outlets, and supportive mentors and peer networks as alternatives to violence. The programs will culminate in a community showcase, celebrating the participants’ unique voices and sharing their work with local community members and artists.

Sisters in Cinema is committed to fostering inclusive pathways to education, self-expression, and opportunity. The organization’s overarching goal is to reduce isolation and foster resilience, leadership, and self-expression in often marginalized girls.
