The Associação Feminina de Estudos Sociais e Universitários (AFESU) is a nongovernmental organization focused on social development through education and professional training, with an emphasis on children and adolescents from socially vulnerable populations. The organization serves approximately 1,000 girls and young women each year.
The Vila Sônia district in Brazil has high rates of social vulnerability, low formal employment, and limited access to public services and educational opportunities, leading to increased risks of school dropout and child labor. The lack of technological infrastructure and training opportunities severely limits girls’ access to the labor market and income generation. These barriers perpetuate gender inequality and hinder economic autonomy and life planning.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, AFESU aims to provide after-school programming in technology and socioemotional skills to girls from vulnerable backgrounds. The project is designed to support the holistic development of participants, with a strong emphasis on family engagement. The project will facilitate access to the job market and will help girls develop socioemotional skills to prepare for future professions.
The project is expected to reach 75 adolescent girls and approximately 300 family members. As a result of this project, the organization aims to generate meaningful changes in the lives of the participants and their families—strengthening autonomy, promoting productive inclusion, and reducing inequalities.
