Access Planet

Access Planet

Access Planet is a nongovernmental organization, founded and led by women with disabilities in Nepal. It is guided by a mission to promote dignified lives for those with disabilities, and its main objectives include: improving access to assistive services; providing opportunities for economic empowerment; promoting disability rights; and changing social attitudes which underestimate the capabilities of people with disabilities. To achieve these goals, the organization has implemented digital literacy programs with assistive technologies, led community sensitization efforts, and used advocacy to improve access to economic opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Girls and women with disabilities are among the most marginalized groups in Nepal, facing intersecting forms of discrimination. Lack of accessibility in healthcare, education, and infrastructure significantly impedes on their quality of life, limiting their ability to learn, work, and fully participate in society. Women and girls with disabilities also experience high rates of violence from family members and caregivers, who may view disability as a burden. The majority do not report their abuse due to the lack of reporting systems and social norms which discount the suffering of people with disabilities. Access Planet is working to change these realities, fighting for the rights and interests of girls and women with disabilities.

With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, Access Planet will implement a multi-faceted project designed specifically to meet the needs of adolescent girls with disabilities. Access Planet will provide digital literacy classes with assistive technology, an adaptive sports camp, and workshops on topics such as gender-based violence, leadership development, and sexual and reproductive rights. The organization will also train local healthcare workers and teachers about the needs of girls with disabilities, working to improve access to essential services. Additionally, girls will also have the opportunity to present the skills they learn, such as public speaking and advocacy, in community forums, which will be held to raise awareness about disability rights and inclusion.

Access Planet expects to directly serve 500 girls through its project. By focusing on key issue areas such inclusive education, leadership development, and grassroots advocacy, the organization hopes to provide girls with the essential skills and support they need to thrive. Access Planet seeks to showcase the power and potential of girls with disabilities, highlighting their strengths and capabilities. Ultimately, the organization hopes to promote a culture of inclusion where girls with disabilities in Nepal are able to confidently learn, play, grow, and lead without feeling limited due to their disability.
