Chhori is a grassroots nonprofit founded in 2013 by Nepali women. “Chhori,” which means “daughter” in Nepali, aims to promote just and equitable conditions for the daughters of Nepal, enabling them to thrive and fulfill their potential. The organization implements projects focused on supporting survivors of violence and girls who are at-risk for leaving school. To date, Chhori has reached more than 10,000 girls through its programs and initiatives. The organization also hosts a radio program to raise awareness for various issues impacting Nepali girls.
Girls in Nepal face a number of barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential. Patriarchal norms often encourage girls to marry at an early age, and Nepal has the third highest rate of child marriage in Asia. Many girls are unable to access opportunities that would enable them to overcome poverty and dependency, leaving them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. As a result, they are experiencing mental health challenges at high rates and do not have support to adequately address these issues.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, Chhori will implement an educational project to reach girls who have dropped out of school or are at a high risk for doing so. Specifically, the organization will provide educational support, counseling, and empowerment training to survivors of violence and trafficking. It will also offer creative outlets for girls to express their emotions and share their experiences, such as storytelling and narrative writing. Additionally, Chhori will host parental and family counseling sessions to ensure that girls have support at home to continue their education.
Chhori anticipates directly reaching 500 girls through this project. The organization also expects to reach approximately 1000 parents through counseling sessions. The project seeks to change harmful norms and attitudes regarding girls’ role in society and contribute to an environment where girls are valued and supported. Ultimately, Chhori seeks to promote a brighter future for Nepali girls, one in which they can confidently pursue their dreams and serve as role models in their communities.
