Flying Kites is a nonprofit organization that partners with teachers in rural Kenya to provide adolescent girls with the opportunities they deserve. The organization believes in a future in which Kenyan girls have the agency to live safe and dignified lives, and it works to address the root causes of gender inequality, including harmful social norms and attitudes. To date, Flying Kites has supported more than 2,000 adolescent girls through its Girls United Clubs, which focus on preventing violence against girls.
Girls in Kenya, especially those living in rural communities, face many barriers to education. Early pregnancies and violence are significant issues, and girls often do not have access to the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their futures. Furthermore, support systems and mentoring opportunities are limited, and girls often lack guidance at a critical time in their development. These challenges inhibit girls’ ability to lead healthy lives and achieve their full potential.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, Flying Kites will expand its Girls United Clubs to 10 additional schools, bringing the program’s reach to 29 schools total in 2026. Through the program, girls will access health education, leadership development courses, and ongoing mentorship. Additionally, Flying Kites will
train teachers and child protection volunteers on how to respond to gender-based violence, equipping them to deliver prevention education to girls and community members. This project will primarily serve girls who are in grades four through nine, which are critical years for personal, social, and academic growth.
Flying Kites expects to support more than 5,000 girls through this project. In previous iterations of this project, beneficiaries reported feeling more confident and capable in responding to the challenges they see in their schools. For example, Nancy, a Girls United Club participant in grade eight stated, “I used to think I had to keep quiet, but now I know that speaking up can save me or my friends.” Flying Kites hopes to build on the previous success of its program and contribute to a brighter future for girls in rural Kenya.
