Msichana Imara Foundation

Msichana Imara Foundation is a young women-led nonprofit organization based in Tanzania that works to ensure girls can access education, health information, and opportunities to reach their full potential. The organization addresses barriers that prevent girls from staying in school, including period poverty, gender-based violence, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and limited economic opportunities. Since 2019, Msichana Imara has reached more than 10,000 adolescent girls and has established menstrual health clubs in 45 schools.

For many deaf girls in Tanzania, access to menstrual health education remains extremely limited as educational training and materials are not adapted to the learning needs of deaf girls. Limited access to affordable menstrual products further increases the challenges faced by deaf girls. As a result, many deaf girls enter puberty without accurate information about menstruation, leading to fear, confusion, stigma, poor menstrual hygiene practices, and lower participation and engagement in school.

With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund,  Msichana Imara will support menstrual education in special needs schools in Arusha, Tanzania. The project will develop menstrual health learning materials and will train 20 teachers to support deaf learners, strengthening schools’ long-term capacity to support deaf girls. The project will also provide reusable sanitary pads to help each girl manage their periods safely while reducing absenteeism linked to menstruation. Parents and community members will be engaged through awareness sessions to reduce stigma and strengthen support for girls at home and in school.

Through this project, 1,000 deaf adolescent girls will directly benefit from menstrual health education and reusable sanitary pads. The project will reach 300 parents and community members through training and awareness activities. By providing accessible education, resources, and supportive environments, the organization hopes to support deaf girls to manage menstruation with confidence, remain in school, and reach their full potential.
