Raising Teenagers Uganda (RTU) is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide adolescent girls a platform for engagement to promote a healthy transition from childhood to adulthood. RTU implements community-based programs that address the factors of absenteeism and school dropout, menstrual health challenges, child marriage, and teenage pregnancy.
Adolescent girls in Uganda face multiple social, economic, and cultural challenges that limit their ability to reach their full potential. High rates of school dropout, child marriage, and teenage pregnancy affect thousands of girls, especially those from low-income and rural communities. Many girls are forced to leave school due to poverty, lack of menstrual hygiene products, limited parental support, and harmful social norms. Once out of school, girls are at greater risk of exploitation, early motherhood and long-term economic dependency. As a result, girls often have limited confidence, financial literacy, and leadership skills needed to navigate adolescence successfully.
With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, RTU will implement a project that holistically addresses challenges facing adolescent girls and young mothers. The project will provide educational access to vulnerable girls, including survivors of teenage pregnancy. The project will also provide safe spaces for girls to connect, build essential life and leadership skills, and practice self-advocacy. Furthermore, the project will reach parents and caregivers through seminars providing practical skills and safeguarding for adolescent girls. Finally, RTU will share information advocating for girls’ education and wellbeing through digital media, radio programs, and community awareness initiatives.
The project will directly reach 750 adolescent girls and young mothers through education support, mentorship, life-skills training, and empowerment programs. Additionally, 1,200 caregivers and community leaders will participate in parenting seminars and community dialogues. Through this project, RTU hopes to empower adolescent girls and young mothers through education, mentorship, life-skills development, and to create stronger support systems for girls’ education, wellbeing, and protection so girls can achieve their full potential.
