The Small World

The Small World

The Small World (TSW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving those from Nepal’s most underserved communities. Recognizing the importance of context-specific programming, TSW’s initiatives are designed and led by community members from Nepal, and the organization has served girls in rural areas for more than a decade. Specifically, TSW operates dormitories, provides leadership development training, and offers scholarships to girls from marginalized backgrounds. More than 90 percent of girls supported by TSW have graduated from high school, with many going onto college or employment opportunities.

In the remote mountain communities of Solukhumbu, Nepal, adolescent girls face persistent barriers to education. Schools are often located hours away from their homes, and many girls must walk under arduous conditions to access educational opportunities. Furthermore, factors such as regressive gender norms and caste-based discrimination introduce additional challenges, increasing the likelihood that girls will drop out of school early. As a result, girls are denied opportunities to reach their full potential and are frequently excluded from community life, perpetuating cycles of inequality and poverty.

TSW is committed to changing the current reality. With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund, the organization will implement a project to remove barriers to education for girls in Solukhumbu. Specifically, the project will provide full scholarships, safe housing, mentorship, and nutritious meals, addressing the various barriers that keep girls from completing their education. In inclusive environments, girls will learn to make informed decisions about their futures while gaining foundational academic skills, including English language and digital literacy classes.

TSW will directly support 200 girls with this project. Ultimately, the organization seeks to disrupt generational poverty and build confidence among girls, empowering them to serve as role models in their families and communities. The organization believes that every girl’s journey produces a ripple effect, contributing to long-term change in Nepal.
