Kona Low Storms, Flood Grantee Stories
"My life changed in an instant when a flash flood swept through my neighborhood around 1 a.m. on March 20th, destroying both…
The government shutdown, which lasted from October 1st to November 12, 2025, disrupted daily life for millions of Americans. For families relying on federal programs like SNAP, support was delayed or cut completely. For federal workers, the shutdown meant continuing to show up for work every day, carrying out their responsibilities without knowing when they would be paid again.
One of those workers was Francesco R., a TSA agent who had served for years protecting travelers and ensuring airport safety. During the shutdown, Francesco went more than a month without being paid. Despite continuing to report to work each day, he and his daughter began to fall behind on bills and soon faced the possibility of eviction. Through no fault of his own, Francesco needed help.
In October, Francesco’s sister started a GoFundMe fundraiser on his behalf. She explained that the funds were needed to help cover essential expenses like rent and utilities so Francesco and his daughter could remain stably housed until his pay was restored. Without support, eviction would not only displace them, but could also cause long-term harm to his credit and ability to recover financially once the shutdown ended.
Shortly after, Francesco received a grant from GoFundMe.org’s Essentials Fund. The support allowed him to stay current on essential bills and remain in his home while he waited to receive the pay he was owed.
"The grant helped us meet our goal for Francesco’s and his daughter’s living expenses. After meeting that initial goal, thankfully, the government opened back up and he did not need any further assistance. And while he is still playing catch up with bills and loan payments, he is on the upside of things and will eventually be back to stability thanks to all the donations in the GoFundMe including the generous grant."
